What is the digital stage? The Digital Stage is a software that enables art and culture creators to rehearse together online and perform live in front of an online audience from anywhere in the world. The technology and programme, developed by Digitale Bühne gGmbH, have been optimised for the performing arts to offer the best possibilities and quality for broadcasting digital theatre, live music and performances. The network aims to "enable professionals and amateurs to artistically appropriate and create digital spaces".

Developing a digital production strategy From the very beginning, teatreBLAU has worked at the interface of film and theatre - already due to the theatre's network, which reaches as far as London, Buenos Aires and Damascus, but is also active primarily in rural areas in the state of Brandenburg, digital tools such as Zoom, Slack, Trello, etc. were in use from the start to make communication and planning possible. In the Corona pandemic, rehearsals over distances became necessary, and here the team developed a strategy for how these rehearsals could take place as systematically as possible and also make communication within the team and with the audience possible.
TeatreBLAU meets the digital stage In the project "Digital Production Practice", teatreBLAU tested and used the digital stage in the rehearsal process for the opera "Ba Ta Clan". For this, the technical requirements first had to be investigated and then installed; for this purpose, a sound technician already accompanied the rehearsal phases in Sineu (Spain). This meant that teatreBLAU members could regularly connect digitally to the rehearsals in progress, for example also to the dress rehearsal in C.In.E Sineu, and give us feedback. Moreover, within the team, this possibility of hybrid rehearsals made it possible to overcome not only national borders but also corona breakdowns.

"In theatre and opera, we bring sound and image together. We work with the PC version of the Digital Stage and look on the one hand to produce the sound quality that is possible with it in detail." (Katja Lebelt in conversation with Digital Stage). The miking of the rehearsal stage turned out to be very significant. A laptop and a web camera were purchased and for the hybrid performance of the opera in October 2022, more video cameras, a digital interface and a modem (mobile wifi) were added. In addition, the professional sound mixing console from teatreBLAU was in use. During the performance, 2 cameramen, a sound technician and the technical team from teatreBLAU were on site, as well as the technical staff of the digital stage and a moderator on the digital stage. The performance of the opera Ba-Ta-Clan on the Digital Stage thrilled both the audience live on site and in the digital auditorium. Digital Stage Program: "Theatre without limits/borders” After evaluating the work processes in the field of digital communication, rehearsals and performance practice on the Digital Stage, teatreBLAU ventures to create a digital playbill for the entire year 2023, which will consist of very different "events". The following formats are planned: The Digital Stage will accompany the rehearsal process of the world premiere of the play "Heimat/Home" on the rehearsal stages and during filming. "Heimat/Home" will premiere with the ensemble of teatreBLAU in November 2023 at the Kleist Forum in Frankfurt (Oder) and will be created in digital, hybrid and analogue rehearsals at different rehearsal locations.
Readings with music will take place, planned only for the Digital Stage and emphasising and revealing its special strengths - in the process, the reading actor will not be in the same place as the musicians. Music and language will mix, creating an extraordinary experience for the audience on the Digital Stage. Impulse speeches will be given followed by audience discussion - this can take place in hybrid form or completely digitally.
Performances of teatreBLAU are streamed, for the digital stage a short film about the performance venue is shot and introduced before the performance, an introduction to the play is played or broadcast live and after the streamed performance a discussion takes place with the actors on stage, the audience on site and the audience on the digital stage. For these hybrid performances, DIWA 23 will work on different formats that make the experience of the performance on the digital stage even more attractive than pure streaming. The aim is to create an interaction between live performance and digital format that strengthens both forms of performance. Small performance venues can become nationally visible and international or metropolitan formats can be seen in small venues. When the actors move, the new audience that is being formed can come along digitally.
Artist Talks: The Digital Stage visits different artists in their homes. A talk takes place on a current topic and the audience can talk to the artists afterwards. In each talk, the audience is limited to 30 people so that a conversation can develop. Four artist talks take place as part of the concert series "Berlin Places", which is organised by teatreBLAU in cooperation with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. Conductors, actors and musicians will have their say, for example Ulrich Tukur, Eva Matthes, Daniel Brühl, Michael Schroth, Hans-Jörg Schellenberger and Kathrina John. Guests on the teatreBLAU Digital Stage: We invite guests and guest performances to the Digital Stage. Theatres, young creative people, artists and scientists present their projects and plays on stage and are accompanied by the teatreBLAU team. The Dresden Symphony Orchestra with its director Markus Rindt, the theatres of the Brandenburg State Association of Performing Arts, the Kleist Forum in Frankfurt (Oder), the "Festival of Animation" as well as national and international artists of various disciplines will be invited. If possible, hybrid workshop formats for young people should also be created here. A collaboration with the "Theater am Rand" is planned for this. In the further development of the format, it would be conceivable to put this guest stage out to public tender for the following year. The criteria for this are to be developed in 2023.
The individual formats can be experienced live and then for a limited time as a recording on a digital stage. The legal conditions for this must be clarified and created.
In addition to these events, a think tank is planned in four sessions in order to think about what the theatre of the future could look like with cultural actors from the most diverse fields. Representatives from different institutions and countries will be invited to discuss their ideas.

Die Entwicklung einer Digitalen Produktionsstrategie Von Anfang an hat teatreBLAU an der Schnittstelle von Film und Theater gearbeitet - schon durch das Netzwerk des Theaters, das bis London, Buenos Aires und Damaskus reicht, aber vor allem auch im ländlichen Raum im Land Brandenburg aktiv ist, waren digitale Tools wie Zoom, Slack, Trello, etc. von Anfang an in Benutzung, um die Kommunikation und Planung möglich zu machen. In der Corona-Pandemie wurden Proben über Distanzen nötig, und hier entwickelte das Team eine Strategie, wie diese Proben möglichst systematisch stattfinden können und auch die Kommunikation innerhalb des Teams und mit dem Publikum möglich ist.
TeatreBLAU trifft auf die digitale Bühne Im Projekt „Digitale Produktionspraxis“ hat teatreBLAU im Probenprozess zur Oper „Ba Ta Clan“ die Digitale Bühne getestet und eingesetzt. Dafür mussten zuerst die technischen Voraussetzungen untersucht und dann installiert werden, hierfür begleitete ein Tontechniker schon die Probenphasen in Sineu (Spanien). So konnten teatreBLAU-Mitglieder sich regelmäßig digital zu den laufenden Proben zuschalten, beispielsweise auch zur Generalprobe im C.In.E Sineu, und konnten uns Rückmeldungen geben. Außerdem konnten innerhalb des Teams, durch diese Möglichkeit der hybriden Proben, nicht nur Ländergrenzen, sondern auch Corona-Ausfälle gut überwunden werden.

Mit der hybriden Aufführung kann das teatreBLAU dem Publikum, das es im Lauf der Jahre auf Mallorca, in Berlin, auf dem Land in Brandenburg und an anderen Orten gewonnen hat, die Möglichkeit bieten, an einem Stück teilzuhaben, unabhängig davon, wo es live gespielt wird. „Im Theater und in der Oper bringen wir Sound und Bild zusammen. Wir arbeiten mit der PC-Version der Digitalen Bühne und schauen auf der einen Seite, dass wir die Tonqualität, die damit möglich ist, im Detail herstellen.“ (Katja Lebelt im Gespräch mit der Digital Stage). Als sehr bedeutsam hat sich die Mikrofonierung der Probebühne herausgestellt. Ein Laptop und eine Web-Kamera wurden angeschafft und für die hybride Aufführung der Oper im Oktober 2022 kamen weitere Videokameras, eine digitale Schnittstelle und ein Modem (mobiles W-Lan) dazu. Außerdem war das professionelle Tonmischpult von teatreBLAU im Einsatz. Bei der Aufführung waren 2 Kameramänner, ein Tontechniker und die technische Mannschaft von teatreBLAU vor Ort, außerdem hinzugeschaltet war das Fachpersonal der Digitalen Bühne und eine Moderatorin auf der Digitalen Bühne.
Die Aufführung der Oper Ba-Ta-Clan auf der Digitalen Bühne hat sowohl das Publikum live vor Ort als auch im digitalen Zuschauerraum begeistert. „Werkzeuge wie die Digitale Bühne eröffnen einfach neue Welten, und ich hoffe, dass die Menschen das begreifen und auch nutzen.“ (Katja Lebelt im Gespräch mit der Digital Stage)
Digitaler Spielplan: „Grenzenloses Theater“ Nach der Evaluation der Arbeitsprozesse im Bereich digitale Kommunikation, Proben und Aufführungspraxis auf der Digitalen Bühne, wagt sich teatreBLAU an einen digitalen Spielplan für das gesamte Jahr 2023, der aus ganz unterschiedlichen „Veranstaltungen“ bestehen wird. Es sind folgende Formate geplant: Die Digitale Bühne begleitet den Probenprozess der Uraufführung des Stückes „Heimat/Home“ auf den Probebühnen und bei den Dreharbeiten. „Heimat/Home“ wird mit dem Ensemble von teatreBLAU im November 2023 am Kleist Forum in Frankfurt (Oder) Premiere haben und sowohl in digitalen, hybriden und analogen Proben an unterschiedlichen Probenorten entstehen.
Es finden Lesungen mit Musikstrong> statt, die nur für die Digitale Bühne geplant sind und ihre speziellen Stärken betonen und aufzeigen - dabei wird der lesende Schauspieler nicht am selben Ort sein wie die Musiker. Musik und Sprache werden sich mischen und für den Zuschauer auf der Digitalen Bühne entsteht ein außergewöhnliches Erlebnis.
Impulsreferatestrong> werden gehalten mit anschließender Publikumsdiskussion - dabei kann dies in hybrider Form oder komplett digital stattfinden.
Aufführungen von teatreBLAUstrong> werden gestreamt, für die Digitale Bühne wird hierfür am Aufführungsort vor der Vorstellung ein kurzer Film über den Aufführungsort gedreht und dieser vorgestellt, eine Einführung zum Stück eingespielt oder live gesendet und im Anschluss an die gestreamte Vorstellung findet ein Gespräch mit den Akteuren auf der Bühne, den Zuschauern vor Ort und den Zuschauern auf der Digitalen Bühne statt. Für diese hybriden Aufführungen soll in DIWA 23 an unterschiedlichen Formaten gearbeitet werden, die das Erlebnis der Aufführung auf der digitalen Bühne noch attraktiver machen als reines Streaming. Angestrebt ist eine Wechselwirkung zwischen live Aufführung und digitalem Format welche beide Aufführungsformen stärkt. Kleine Aufführungsorte können überregional sichtbar werden und internationales oder Großstädtische Formate können auch in kleinen Orten gesehen werden. Wenn die Akteure wandern kann das so neu zu bildende Publikum digital mitkommen.
Künstlergespräche: Die Digitale Bühne besucht unterschiedliche Künstler in ihrem Zuhause. Es findet ein Gespräch statt zu einem aktuellen Thema und die Zuschauer können im Anschluss mit den Künstlern sprechen. In jedem Gespräch ist die Zuschauerzahl auf 30 Menschen begrenzt, damit ein Gespräch entstehen kann. Vier Künstlergespräche finden im Rahmen der von teatreBLAU mit den Berliner Symphonikern in Kooperation durchgeführten Konzertreihe „Berliner Orte“ statt. Hier werden Dirigenten, Schauspieler und Musiker zu Wort kommen so zum Beispiel Ulrich Tukur, Eva Matthes, Daniel Brühl, Michael Schroth, Hans-Jörg Schellenberger und Kathrina John.
Gäste auf der Digitalen Bühne von teatreBLAU: Wir laden Gäste und Gastspiele auf die Digitale Bühne ein. Theater, junge Kreative, Künstler, Wissenschaftler stellen ihre Projekte und Stücke auf der Bühne vor und werden vom teatreBLAU Team dabei begleitet. Angefragt hierfür werden die Dresdner Symphoniker mit ihrem Leiter Markus Rindt, die Theater des Landesverbandes Darstellende Künste Brandenburg, das Kleist Forum in Frankfurt (Oder), das „Festival of Animation“ sowie nationale und internationale Künstler verschiedenster Sparten. Wenn möglich sollen hier auch hybride Workshop Formate für Jugendliche entstehen. Hierfür ist eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem „Theater am Rand“ geplant. In der Weiterentwicklung des Formates wäre es denkbar, diese Gast-Bühne jeweils für das Folgejahr öffentlich auszuschreiben. Die Kriterien hierfür sollen in 2023 erarbeitet werden.
Die einzelnen Formate sind live erlebbar und anschließend für eine begrenzte Zeit auch als Aufzeichnung auf einer digitalen Bühne zu erleben. Dafür müssen die rechtlichen Bedingungen geklärt und geschaffen werden.
Neben diesen Veranstaltungen ist ein Think Tank in vier Sessions angedacht um mit Kulturakteuren der unterschiedlichsten Sparten darüber nach zu denken wie das Theater der Zukunft aussehen könnte. Dazu werden Vertreter unterschiedlichster Institutionen und Länder eingeladen und stellen ihre Ideen zur Diskussion.
