If houses could tell stories.

With the literature concert series, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra presents eight Berlin locations. Four places in the 21/22 season and four in the 22/23 season.

Berlin - this is where ideas, cultures, people and biographies met and continue to meet, as well as different social and political concepts and systems. All in a very confined space.

Traces of this encounter are taken up in the literature concert series 'Berlin Places'. The concerts combine music, literature and film with the history and atmosphere of the 'Berlin Places'.

In the concerts, beauty and ugliness, contradiction and change of the metropolis become visible and audible in a special way.

In continuation of the literature concerts „Perspektivwechsel“.

Artistic director: Katja Lebelt in collaboration with teatreBLAU.

Concept: Philippe Perotto.

Upcoming concerts in this series:

Konzeption: Philippe Perotto.

Urban warfare, left-wing scene, artists' quarters and student district, subculture and counterculture are all associated with the old working-class district of Kreuzberg, which exerts a great attraction all over the world.

In the early years of the Kreuzberg bohemia, migrants hardly played a role. But this changed at the latest with the arrival of the first so-called 'guest worker families', who lived in Kreuzberg's old buildings, " for an unlimited period but at the longest until demolition" as the tenancy agreements said at the time.

Here, revolutionary impetus, an anti-authoritarian attitude to life, different nationalities, cultures and lifestyles come together to form the 'Kreuzberg mixture', which is also reflected in music and literature.

Jewish Cultural Association (Jüdischer Kulturbund)

  • Works by Mahler, Korngold a.o.
  • Mikis Theodorakis: Cretan Concertino for alto saxophone
  • Speaker: n.n.
  • Conductor: Justus Thorau
  • Performed by the Berliner Symphoniker

The Cultural Association was founded in Berlin in July 1933 as a reaction to the dismissal of Jewish artists from the state cultural institutions. The initiators of the association were the director Kurt Baumann and the former director of the Charlottenburg Opera Kurt Singer.

The programme of the association included lectures, readings, concerts, opera, operetta and theatre performances. In addition to the 'classics', the concerts increasingly featured works by composers who had been banned in Germany because of their origins. The programme was strictly supervised by the regime and was intended only for Jews.

The programme of the last concert included the Resurrection Symphony - Gustav Mahler's 2nd Symphony. The name of the symphony was at once foreboding, hope and promise.

On 11 September 1941, the Gestapo ordered the dissolution of the Jewish Cultural Association in Germany.

Together with actors and actresses, the Berliner Symphoniker will perform music and literature from the programme of the Jewish Cultural Association, thus illuminating this part of Berlin's history both musically and literarily.

The Airlift

  • Compositions by American and British composers
  • Speaker and vocals: Femke Soetenga and Michael Schrodt
  • Conductor: Bernd Ruf
  • Performed by the Berliner Symphoniker

2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the start of the Airlift.

The skies over Berlin were full of planes again. This time, three years after the end of the Second World War, their roar did not mean disaster but promised hope.

The airlift brought not only coal, equipment and food to West Berlin with its 2.1 million population, but also the American way of life. Coca-Cola, hot dogs, Chewing Gum, blue jeans and Hollywood movies, street cruisers and fitted kitchens, nylon, Tupperware and music like swing and later rock'n'roll - Americanisation took hold not only of minds but of the whole body.

  • Werke von Mahler, Korngold u.a.
  • Sprecher/in: n.n.
  • Speaker: n.n.
  • Dirigent: Justus Thorau
